APPROVED MARKET VENDORS WHO WISH TO PARTICIPATE IN THE BRIDGE CARD PROGRAM (SNAP) MAY CLICK HERE FOR THE DOWNLOADABLE AGREEMENT.
APPLICATION FOR DUFB PROGRAM IS AVAILABLE DIRECTLY FROM THE MARKET MANAGER.
DUFB PROGRAM IS FOR MICHIGAN PRODUCE VENDORS ONLY.
1. What is SNAP?
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is a federally funded program. In Michigan it is commonly known as the “Bridge Card”. The Bridge card is an electronic benefit transfer system and works just like a debit card.
2. Why would I want to be involved in this at our market?
Participation in the program at our market is voluntary. However, it will allow you to sell goods to many customers that would otherwise use their Bridge Card at another vendor, another market ,or at a retail grocery store. Simply put: it will give you more sales.
3. How does SNAP work at the market?
The customer will come to our information booth. We will process their transaction and give them the requested dollar amount in wooden nickels (tokens). The customer will then use the tokens at participating vendor stalls to purchase eligible items. You accept the tokens (which will be in $1 amounts each) and give them the purchased items. At the end of the market day, you will bring all of your tokens to the market info booth. We will give you a receipt for the amount. You will then receive a check from the market for that amount. We plan to be able to provide a 2 week (maximum) turnaround for you to receive you r money.
4. What are “eligible foods”?
They include: breads, pasta and cereals, fruits and vegetables, value added foods (honey, syrup, jams, jellies, sauces, salsas, etc), prepackaged food items (baked goods, muffins, etc), and seeds and plants that will produce food for the household.
5. What is NOT included that might be for sale at the market?
Those items that are not eligible include: any non-food items, hot/ready to eat items or foods meant to consumed “on the spot”.
6. Can we give change for tokens?
NO CHANGE can be given for tokens. It is usually not a problem to offer the customer an additional l item to make up the difference. It is up to your discretion how to handle less than $1 increments, but no change is allowed.
7. How will customers know that we accept the Bridge Card at our individual stall?
The market will provide a sign for you to post at your stall.
8. Who can manage the tokens / sell SNAP foods at my stall?
You may designate anyone(s) you wish to sell SNAP foods/accept tokens. We just require that they are well aware and trained regarding how the program works and what foods qualify.
